Bookbinder is a web-based app for creating eBooks. Using Bookbinder, you can upload your manuscript and use our powerful Visual Editor to format your text much like you would with a word processor. Adding meta data (author, ISBN, etc.) is just as easy. And you can select one of our book templates and customize it using our Style Editor.
When you’re done, Export Your Book your book for Kindle and ePub devices.
Select one of two options:
If you are a new user, visit https://bookbinder.co.
If you are an existing user, click on the plus icon in the sidebar and select the “Upload Book” menu item.
Click on the “select” button to open a file browser.
Navigate to the location where your document is stored and select it.
The file upload should start automatically. If not, click on the “upload” button.
Once your document has been uploaded, you will be redirected to the Page Type Wizard.
If you pages don’t seem to be in the right order, you can re-organize them after this step.
This Page Type Wizard will allow you to quickly identify and classify reference pages (e.g. preface, introduction, epilogue, etc.). Bookbinder attempts to set page type values automatically based on their title.
Adjust the fields as required and then click on the Save (or “Skip”) button to begin editing and designing your book.
Some eReaders, like iBooks, expect reference pages to be explictly indentified in an eBook. Indentifying reference pages is also helpful for letting Bookbinder know how to treat certain pages.
For example, books generally don’t have a visible title on the dedication page. When exporting/generating book files, Bookbinder will not show the page title on a page explicitly identified as the “dedication” page.
If you want to choose the fonts used in your book, you need to download and install our font package.
eBooks that use custom fonts, need to include those font files within the eBook itself. Fonts like Helvetica, Georgia and Times New Roman can’t be embedded/redistributed without permission–usually aquired by paying a licensing fee.
We have created a package of fonts that are free to be used in eBooks without any fee or special permission.
Currently the package includes “Cormorant”, “Cormorant Garamond”, “Dosis”,”Neuton”, and “Squarish Sans.” (More fonts will be added in the future.)
The zip file incudes installation instructions in the “readme.txt” file.
Once the fonts have been installed on your computer, open/reload Bookbinder for the new fonts to appear in your font lists.
Bookbinder will automatically embed the relevant font files into your eBook during the export process.
Bookbinder’s Visual Editor is divided into several section. The Header Bar contains text fields for updating the page title, subtitle, and chapter author.
In the larger area below you will find the a Toolbar that contains various text icons formatting icons (bold, italic, underline) much like a Word Processor.
Under the Toolbar is the Content Area where you can edit and insert text along with other elements such as images, lists and tables.
At the bottom of the screen in the Footer Bar. Starting from the far left is the word count for the current page. If you haven’t provided Bookbinder with your email address, there will be a text messaging prompting you to register an account. Further right are the Download, Style/Preview and Save buttons.
In the sidebar there is an button with the gears/settings icon. Clicking this button will reveal a drop-down menu with several options:
You can update the meta data for your book (author name, book title, book subtitle, ISBN, etc.).
Select a book template (which can be further customized on the Style & Preview screen).
Upload a cover image for your book (jpg, png).
This will delete current book and all of its pages, images and other assets.
This action can not be reversed.
Clicking the Download button will convert your Bookbinder book into eBook files.
If there is any data you forgot to enter (author name, cover image), Bookbinder will prompt you to correct the issue.
You will then be asked to select the file formats you would book converted into.
There are multiple ePub options since various online book stores have various special requirements. Bookbinder can create files that are optimized for these various stores while also providing a “Generic ePub” that can be used everywhere else.
Once you have selected your file format options, click on the “checkout” button to pay for your book via credit card. (You can make unlimited changes and downloads without further payment.)
Once your payment has been accepted, you will be returned to the Download screen where you can begin your download.
